Macclesfield Town have been wound up in the High Court over £500,000 debts.
Macclesfield were relegated from the EFL at the end of the 2019-20 season having incurred points deductions that placed them below Stevenage Town in the EFL. Macclesfield have had numerous issues the last season including having to field a youth side in the first round of the 2019-20 FA Cup after their players refused to play due to unpaid wages.
Macclesfield have been plagued with financial difficulties since they were initially relegated from the EFL in 2012. Even though the covid pandemic would have not helped their finances the club had outstanding debts to the Inland Revenue and a past manager amongst others.
Its unlikely that the winding up order will be overturned and it is anticipated the 2020-2 National League season will run one club light.
